Silver Kia Sorento SUV crossing mountain stream with water splashing

The 2026 Kia Sorento continues to build upon its reputation as a leading midsize SUV, offering upgrades in performance, technology, and versatility. Here’s how the 2026 Kia Sorento compares to competitors like the Hyundai Santa Fe and Toyota Highlander for drivers in Lee’s Summit, Missouri.

Kia Interior and Technology

Inside, the 2026 Kia Sorento impresses with twin 12.3-inch digital displays for the instrument cluster and infotainment center, supplying a modern, unified cockpit layout. Standard wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto make connecting and using your smartphone seamless. Compared to the Santa Fe and Highlander, the Sorento’s infotainment system is lauded for its responsive, user-friendly interface and larger display real estate.

Cargo and Passenger Space

Flexibility defines the Sorento’s interior. With seating for up to seven and an available third row, the Sorento easily accommodates growing families and active lifestyles. Cargo capacity is generous, and smart storage solutions maximize usable space for gear and groceries alike. Both the Hyundai Santa Fe and Toyota Highlander offer third-row seating, but the Sorento stands out with its thoughtful interior design and more comfortable passenger accommodations.

Safety Features

Safety is at the forefront of the 2026 Sorento’s design. The entire line-up comes standard with the latest Kia Drive Wise driver-assistance suite, which includes:

  • Adaptive cruise control (with updated machine learning for smoother traffic adaptation)
  • Forward collision-avoidance assist (now enhanced with cyclist and intersection detection)
  • Lane keeping and lane following assist
  • Highway Driving Assist 2, featuring automatic lane changes and enhanced highway driving support

These technologies offer drivers an extra layer of safety, surpassing many standard safety features found in the 2026 Hyundai Santa Fe and Toyota Highlander.

Performance

The 2026 Kia Sorento provides a selection of advanced powertrains, including a standard 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine and an available turbocharged 2.5-liter engine that delivers robust horsepower. The turbocharged powertrain stands out for providing a more dynamic and engaging driving experience than the base engines of the Hyundai Santa Fe and Toyota Highlander. Enhanced traction is available with the Sorento’s all-wheel-drive system, featuring torque vectoring and a locking center differential for improved handling in challenging conditions.

Silver Kia EV6 electric crossover front view on dramatic landscape

Kia America is making a significant move to enhance the electric vehicle (EV) charging experience for its customers by adopting the North American Charging Standard (NACS). This transition will greatly expand charging accessibility for Kia EV owners across the United States.

Starting from September 4, 2024, customers who purchase a new 2025 or 2026 Kia EV9 or a 2026 Kia EV6 will receive a free NACS adapter. This adapter will allow these vehicles to access more than 16,500 NACS DC fast chargers throughout the country, effectively increasing the number of Kia-accessible DC charge points by over 80%.

The free NACS adapters are expected to be delivered to eligible customers in early 2025. It’s important to note that this offer is specifically for new purchases made on or after September 4, 2024. Customers who bought their Kia EV6, EV9, or Niro EV before this date will have the option to purchase an adapter from an authorized Kia dealer at a later time.

Kia plans to make three types of NACS adapters available:

  • J1772 to NACS: Allows NACS-equipped Kia EVs to use AC charging on existing Level 2 chargers
  • NACS to CCS1: Allows existing Kia EVs to use DC fast charging
  • CCS1 to NACS: Enables NACS-equipped Kia EVs to charge on existing CCS DC chargers

The switch to NACS is part of a broader industry trend, with most automakers planning to adopt the NACS port for vehicles assembled in 2025 and beyond. This move towards a unified charging standard is expected to bolster the nation’s EV infrastructure and improve the overall charging experience for EV owners.

Kia EV owners will be able to access and pay for charging through the Kia Access app, which are planned for early 2025. The official date for Kia EVs to gain entry to Tesla Superchargers has been set for January 15, 2025.
